Engine Machining

Cylinder Boring & Honing

Cylinder boring and honing restore worn cylinder walls so they’re ready for new pistons and piston rings. Depending on the condition of the engine block, one or both services may be recommended.

Engine Machining

Cylinder Boring & Honing

Uniform Bores and a Proper Ring Finish.

As an engine accumulates miles, the cylinder walls gradually wear. Boring removes material from the cylinder to create a new, uniform surface, while honing provides the finish needed for proper piston ring seating.

Cylinder Boring & Honing Information

Why Boring & Honing Matter

Cylinder walls naturally wear over time, and that wear isn’t always obvious. Even small changes to the cylinder can affect how new pistons and rings fit. Boring and honing restore the cylinder walls so they’re ready for the next stage of use.

What’s the Difference?

Although they’re often performed together, boring and honing serve different purposes. Boring removes material to create a uniform cylinder, while honing creates the final surface finish and crosshatch pattern needed for piston rings. Skipping one step when it’s needed can leave new components working against a worn surface.

What Is a Cylinder Crosshatch?

The crosshatch is the fine pattern left behind during the honing process. It helps retain a thin film of oil on the cylinder wall, which supports normal piston ring operation. Without the proper surface finish, new piston rings may not perform as intended.
